Featured wine of the month – Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel

A warm and rather spicy choice!

Our featured wine of the month for October is the Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel!

The Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel is grown and made by the Sehesio family and their carefully selected growers. A Californian wine family with a rich history dating back over a century. In 1895, a newly immigrated family from Italy planted Zinfandel (or Primitivo as it is known in Italy) in their vineyard in Sonoma. Their vineyards contain many old Zinfandel vines the family planted and they have become custodians of vineyards with vines nearly a century old in other regions.

This particularly plush red wine is made from grapes grown across the Sonoma Valley. The grapes are fermented in many small fermentations. The wines start their ferment in stainless steel but then they are transferred into barrels to complete their ferment.  The wines then stay in barrel for about 10 months to settle before blending. With their eye on the freshness of the fruit, the family choose over 90% seasoned French and American oak to complement the new American oak portion.

The final blend is not limited to Zinfandel though. Zinfandel makes up 83% of the blend, with companionable glug of Petite Sirah (10%) and 7% other red grape varieties. This is a wine that regularly receives high points, awards and accolades. It goes without saying that it is one smooth operator.

About the Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel:

Here is a deeply coloured Italian varietal red that is spicy to its core.  It is a complex wine with a savoury olive edge to the plum fruit. The richness of the wine is balanced and remains very elegant and fresh thanks to that well judged oak maturation. In saying that, there is no denying its powerful and mouthfilling boldness.

Serving suggestions:

This wine is good to enjoy without food too, but you could pair it with barbeque meats such as ribs, or slow cooked pork or even a simply gnocchi topped with gorgonzola.
