About this wine
The Piano del Cerro is made by a small co-operative in Basilicata in Acerenza in the heart of the Aglianico del Vulture zone. Fruit for this wine comes from vineyards in the towns of Maschito, Irsina and Acerenza on the slopes of Mount Vulture, an extinct volcano, in Basilicata. Soils in this area are volcanic and rich.
The vineyards belonging to this estate are superb: low-trained and planted on the volcanic soils of the slopes of Mount Vulture at altitudes of up to 600 metres above sea level. The volcanic soils are rich in potassium, which gives the wines a good level of acidity. The Aglianico vines planted here come from a selection of clones from the oldest vineyards in the Acerenza town. The area is one of Italy’s most remote and poorest. It is isolated and undeveloped and, according to consultant winemaker Alberto Antonini, is like stepping back a few centuries in time.
Fermentation took place in small oak vats. The wine was then aged in new oak barriques for 24 months,
Tasting note
Deep red in colour, this wine displays hints of blackberry and blackcurrants mixed with spicy, balsamic notes on the nose. It has great structure on the palate and good length on the finish. This is also a good wine to be cellared.
Food pairing suggestions.
A ripe rich red wine that will be a good match with a Italian beef stew or an ale and steak pie. Or some grilled lamb chops topped with grilled baby tomatoes.
