Featured wine of the month – Vigneti del Vulture ‘Pipoli’ Greco Fiano

A fruity, perfumed white from Southern Italy!

Our current most popular white wine for this Summer!

This fresh white wine is a special blend from the region of Basilicata, in Italy’s south. The winery is quite new, established in 2009, however, the region is an ancient wine making region. It was first settled by the Greeks in 7th Century BC.

Vigneti del Vulture focuses on producing fine wines from their native grapes.

It will be no surprise then that this white wine is a blend that is not usually found sold in the UK. This wine is a blend of Greco and Fiano grape varieties. Greco adds extra body and a deeper flavoured stonefruit character and some light herbs. The Fiano is slightly nutty and adds some floral and pear overtones.

While both of these grapes are delicious when made into single grape variety wines, they are even better blended together. As they are here.

A white wine that while fruity, is so well balanced that it will please even the fussiest of wine drinkers!

The vineyards for this wine are on the slopes of the extinct volcano, Monte Vulture. Not much has changed over the ages. It is here that some of the best white and red wines in the Basilicata region are produced. The soils are volcanic and rich. And many of the vineyards are planted at an altitude of 500-600 metres above sea level.

At this altitude, the vineyards are cooler. This means the grapes grow more slowly taking the time to develop more complex flavours. In fact, this area is one of the latest to be harvested in Italy.

This also means that the grapes have time to develop more concentrated flavours. The specialities of the region are Greco and Fiano for white wine and Aglianico for powerful red wines. The result is that these wines are quickly earning an international reputation for high quality.

Finally, we also sell the Vigneti del Vulture ‘Piano del Cerro’ Aglianico del Vulture which is a spicy, smoky and rich full bodied red.
