Featured wine of the month – The Chocolate Block
Lush and rich – a wine of bold personality …
The Chocolate Block is amongst South Africa’s most successful and recognisable wines. It has created quite the loyal following in the past 20 years since it was first created.
It is one of the wines that is made by Boekenhoutskloof although it has its own ‘brand’ so to speak. One of the changes of the past decade has been to make this particular wine proud of its Swartland origins. The majority of the grapes harvested for the wine come from that region. Another change was to source the grapes from vineyards where the vines are grown sustainably.
The dominant grape in this wine is Syrah. Particularly important for its contribution to the aromas and flavours that define the wine – Chocolate. The blend also has some Grenache, Cinsault, and very ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. Plus it gets a small addition of Viognier to add vibrancy and texture.
Adding to the spiciness of the wine and to smoothness of the tannins, the different grapes are vinified and matured separately. This allows the wine makers to make sure that the wines are in the best condition before the final blend is chosen and bottled.
This is one wine that will live very happily in a well managed cellar. Or… you can enjoy its rich lushness now as it is ready to go!

About The Chocolate Block:
The nose is dark and brooding and entices with its black fruit aromas and hints of pepper and spice. The blueberry and blackberry of the nose follow through onto a layered, full palate with flavours of dark plums and notes of dust, graphite and cocoa nib. The wine is focused and elegant, with fresh yet integrated acidity and fine-grained tannins, adding to exceptional structure. Black currant and milk chocolate linger on a silky finish. This is also a wine that can live in the cellar for the next 5 + years.
Serving suggestions:
Enjoy with roast meats, particularly beef and venison! Why not try it with Moroccan spiced lamb tagine or a slow cooked beef stew?
