Featured wine of the month – Ill Poggione Rosso di Montalcino

Generous and bold – from one of the region’s pioneers …

The Franceschi family was amongst the first wineries to market Brunello di Montalcino at the turn of last century.  Brunello is a fine red wine from the Tuscan town of Montalcino made from the region’s unique grape.  Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino was the first Brunello wine released in the 1860s. And the Franceschi family were not far behind.

Brunello di Montalcino is made from a clone of Sangiovese, a grape native to Central Italy.  According to the Ill Poggione winemaker, this Rosso di Montalcino is a younger, more accessible version of the family’s great Brunello di Montalcinos. They are made with the same grape variety, just from younger vines. These wines are also aged just for 12 months in large format oak rather than the 36 to 48 months for those Brunello wines.

Ultimately what this means is that the wines have soft tannins, and you don’t have to wait around for it to age to enjoy it. This red is bold, with some toasted oak character, but the focus is on the fruit here.

Of course, if you did wish to age this wine further, short term ageing will smooth it out further. However, this red is ready to enjoy right now.
