Featured Wine of The Month – d’Arenberg The Peppermint Paddock

Vibrant red bubbles for the Festive Season!

Our featured wine of the month for December is the d’Arenberg The Peppermint Paddock.

d’Arenberg is one of Australia’s well loved wine brands known for their high quality wines, often with quirky names on the label. Not only that but the Osborn family is one of Australia’s early wine families and their wines have helped put McLaren Vale on the world wine map. McLaren Vale is a South Australian region, a neighbour of the better known Barossa Valley, that is best known for its soft drinking red wines.

This is an organic non-vintage sparkling wine made using the same methods as Champagne, but with a twist. It is a vibrant purple hued red!

Unsurprisingly, since it is a wine made from Chambourcin and the Spanish grape, Graciano. A very lush and fruity blend that suits the style very well. Some of d’Arenberg’s wines are also biodynamic. The family has committed to convert more of their vineyards to biodynamic practices.

Behind the name…

The Peppermint Paddock refers to the peppermint gum trees that surround the vineyard that was replanted with Chambourcin in 1989.  Chambourcin is an unusual grape in that it is a hybrid and more often found in the vineyards of the USA.

The Custodian Grenache

About d’Arenberg The Peppermint Paddock:

Here is a richly purple hued sparkling red that is ripe berries, cherries, liquorice and menthol.  It is an intriguing red where the bubbles form a soft mousse that keeps that exuberant fruit well balanced. It is soft and round in the mouth and those flavours really last a long time.

Serving suggestions:

It needs no food, it is a celebration all by itself. However, it goes very well with a wide range of flavours from tiny appetisers, burgers with beetroot relish to black bean beef, to slow cooked spare ribs and even Stilton.
